Northeast Ohio Nursing Postsecondary Completion Initiative
Strengthening the nursing workforce in Northeast Ohio
The Northeast Ohio Nursing Postsecondary Completion Initiative (NEO-NPCI) is a transformative program aimed at expanding and diversifying the region’s nursing workforce. Led by Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) in collaboration with healthcare employers, workforce organizations, and educational institutions, this initiative is funded through a $3.6 million U.S. Department of Labor H-1B Job Training Grant.
To help meet the urgent need for qualified nurses in Northeast Ohio, NEO-NPCI focuses on increasing the completion and licensure rates for students pursuing Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs. By addressing barriers to success, the initiative aims to ensure that more students—particularly those from historically underrepresented communities—can enter and thrive in the nursing profession.
Key Program Goals
- To boost nursing completions and licensure rates
The initiative provides direct support, including tuition assistance and case management, to help students complete their nursing programs and pass licensing exams.
- To expand the workforce
By working with partners such as the Ohio League For Nursing, the Cleveland Council of Black Nurses, and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, NEO-NPCI promotes equitable access to nursing education and employment opportunities.
- To enhance first-year nurse retention
Employer partners—including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and MetroHealth—are engaged in strengthening onboarding and mentorship programs to improve first-year retention for new nurses.
Who We Serve
The program is designed to support 1,025 participants across Cuyahoga Community College, Lakeland Community College, Lorain County Community College, and Stark State College. Eligible students receive grant-funded training, career coaching, and financial assistance to help them succeed.
Partners & Impact
NEO-NPCI is built on a strong network of partners in education, healthcare, workforce development, and philanthropy. Together, we are working to close the nursing workforce gap, improve healthcare access, and strengthen Northeast Ohio’s economy.
