Empowering Nurse Educators.

Expanding Clinical Training Capacity.

Strengthening The Future Of Healthcare.

Northeast Ohio is facing a critical shortage of nursing clinical adjunct faculty—the instructors who supervise and teach students in hospitals, long-term care centers, and community-based clinical sites. Without enough clinical faculty, nursing programs cannot enroll more students, and our region cannot graduate the nurses we urgently need.

The Cuyahoga County Healthcare Sector Partnership (CCHSP), powered by New Bridge Cleveland, launched the Nursing Clinical Adjunct Faculty Initiative to solve this challenge by recruiting, training, and supporting experienced nurses to become part-time clinical instructors. This regional effort expands clinical seat capacity, strengthens the quality of instruction, and creates new professional opportunities for nurses across our hospital systems.

Why This Matters

  • Nursing schools across the region rely heavily on adjunct clinical instructors.
  • Turnover can reach 40% each year.
  • Hospitals and schools struggle to keep up with clinical slot demand.
  • Without more clinical faculty, programs cannot grow—even when student interest is high.

Our solution: Create a strong, consistent, regional pipeline of clinical adjunct faculty who are trained, supported, and ready to teach the next generation of nurses.

What is the role of nursing clinical adjunct faculty?

  • Nursing adjunct clinical faculty are contracted by a school of nursing to provide specialty knowledge, hands-on training, and guidance while engaging in dialogue intended to develop clinical judgment with a group of nursing students in hospitals, long-term care facilities. They teach practical skills and coach students to apply classroom theory to real-life situations

Why should I become a clinical faculty instructor?

  • Maintain your current position while choosing from many available per semester teaching contracts.
  • To contribute to solving the nursing shortage by training future nurses
  • To gain leadership and teaching experience that enhances career opportunities
  • To pass on real-world knowledge and skills to the next generation

What are the requirements to become an adjunct faculty?

  • The Ohio Board of Nursing requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and 2 years of relevant/ bedside nursing experience in your specialty.
  • Some schools have program accreditation which may require a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and/or a clinical specialty or Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) certification to serve as nursing clinical adjunct faculty for their program.
